Many couples have the same argument repeatedly. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples explores the patterns of conflict between two people. EFT, founded by Sue Johnson in the 80s and supported by substantial research, focuses on the emotional attachment between two people. According to Johnson, EFT “assumes that we all have very deep needs for safe connection and emotional contact, and that when we don't get those needs, we get stuck in very negative interactional patterns.”
In therapy, couples come to understand their role in these repeated conflicts. Often each partner is triggered by early experiences in which their sense of self was formed. By exploring these patterns and identifying habitual responses (such as retreating or becoming defensive), partners can learn new ways to respond, fundamentally shifting the dynamic between partners, leading to an increase in intimacy and improved communication.
